On this episode, I interviewed Ed Lea, the Senior Rehab Strength & Conditioning Coach at Harlequins Rugby Club in the UK. Ed’s position is a relatively new/unique one where he splits his time between working with the long term injured players as well as the entire squad within his position group. The main focus of this episode was training while injured and ways to work on the injury while staying in the best shape as possible.
Some topics discussed were…
Ed’s background and current position.
The biggest things to consider when a player becomes injured.
Using injured time to better the player with life skills, work on a weakness within the sport, or work on a physical weakness.
How to still train hard with different common injuries (ankle, knee, shoulder).
Ed’s opinion on how/if maintenance programs post injury should be incorporated.
What boxes Ed likes the players to check before he believes they are ready to “return to sport/play” physically and mentally.
How/why he incorporates neck training within rugby.
Biggest Pete Peeve.
